Series - Reposted

Posted on Friday 30 July 2004

The first time I posted these I apparently really screwed up the comments settings. Here we go again.

As promised, here are some pieces from the series I’m working on now. I would appreciate any meaningful feedback. Thanks.

    Hey Rich,
Nice! I assume you are talking about the series of four.
    1. Crab and Crane - interesting compostion, but I’m not sure where you intend the focal point to be.

    2. Desert landscape - is this from a photo or your imagination such as the crane and crab piece? You are hinting at lighting on some objects but totally ignoring others. Pencil strokes look rushed on the bottom where as the top looks much more refined.

    3. Legs and Shoes - something not quite right about the right calf and ankle, hard to tell where the light source is coming from.

    4. Self portrait - proportions look good, but shading/contrast is stronger in some areas and others not so strong.

Your pencil sketches look good, you have proportion and size down pretty much. Try working on depth using more contrast, I suggest doing some studies on how light falls and reflects on objects. Draw from life more and keep it up, there is an obvious progression of improvement and growth from the first to the last image.

    Hope that helps!

Now go on and add your mark on the photoshop battle in the previous thread!

    Doug,

Awesome man. Exactly what I’m looking for. Yeah I’m limbering up the old drawing muscles, and man they were out of shape.

Crab.. Totally from the ether, didn’t base it on anything.. and you nailed it, it needs a focal point. Eye doesn’t know where to settle.

Desert… from a postcard my grandparents sent me in response to me asking them for a photo (original photo of theirs, mind you).. the postcard was another artist’s hotel room desert scape. I did what i could, and i like the results, but the lack of a consistant light sorce as well as lack of foreground detail does bug me, and is something i’m working out in the final… This piece is currently being done at about 2x size, in soft and hard pastels.

Legs.. yup the anatomy is sloppy… this was the first drawing i’d done in ages, and it shows. I do like the feel of it, close up and intimate but still anonymous.. voyeurlike i suppose.

Self portrait.. drawing on the right side of my face (left side of image) is sloppy, and yeah the value structure isn’t optimum.. but getting better.

Soon as I think of something to do with the battle, i’ll be in the ring…

Thanks a bunch for the crit, it’s what i miss most about being in a community of artists. people think they’ll offend you with honest crit, and it couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’m not sure where #1 was going. I guess it’s a mixture of ideas. I think this was my least favorite not necessarily because of composition, but because of style.

I liked the second one. It looks like you spent more time on the foreground objects than on the background - was this your purpose? When you go darker in shade you may want to go much more darker. It will add more depth to your objects if that is your intent. The shadowy effect behind your cactuses is extremely good. It was a good call.

Overall, #3 is just plain good. Not much to say, here. It’s very soft, but, I think you were going for that.

I like #4, but, who is that dorky model that you used for it (just kidding!)? This is really good. I avoid portraits. Doing them scares me and they take so long to do - at least for me. And there’s that “your portrait has to look like your model” thing - whatever! Hehe. Anyway, I would like to see more of these. I think the face is the hardest relief of all.
