Feast or Famine

Sometimes I marvel at living in the age of technology. Sometimes I feel so blessed to have grown up when computers were really hitting their stride, and being able to use my predilection for them to make a living.

Sometimes all the computers in my life let me down, big time.

My own computer, c drive in particular, was first to go. It simply needed an OS reinstall, overtop the old. Thus I didn’t lose anything but time.

Then my wife’s laptop’s HD went south, overnight… CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK. Hrm, HD went south, it sounds like, I thought to myself. Paid $50 to have that hunch confirmed, and to make sure I had the facts on my side when I told P that she had lost everything she didn’t have backed up. She’s a lot more gung ho about backing things up now, understandably. Everyone get’s burned at least once in this fashion, I think.

Then my lovable c drive went bad for good, and I had to get a new one. $49 bucks after $30 and $20 mail-in rebates. I was THANK THE STARS able to access the crapped out drive as a secondary later on, and saved my tunes, documents, favorites, etc. That was a happy day.

Now, we’ve been sharing my computer as her laptop is HD’less. This is fine, but it’s really not an optimal situation. We are both big nerds, and need our own nerdy lovebox with which to peruse the world’s store of trivial data ON OUR SLIGHTEST WHIM!
Standing in line for this is not a long-term solution, so…

Two days again, Apple launched the G5 iMac. It’s pretty, shiny, fast, and almost affordable. I think this is what we’re going to be getting for P. (the middle option) She’s very excited about it, and truth be told I am as well. The little party of me that is part art snob, part design purist, and part technoholic REALLY wants one for myself.

I hope she lets me play with it from time to time.
