Calves and Abs

Posted on Friday 17 December 2004

In light of my lack of things to say, I thought I might just detail the way I have my workouts split at the moment. I described shoulders/traps already, so here is what I’ll be doing tonight.

Calves: (I don’t have equipment to do much beyond calf raises, so I do em a lot and with a lot of weight. I use a 4″ tall block of wood to stand on so that my heels can drop below my toes, increasing the overall range of motion while weighted)
Barbell Calf Raise: 4 sets, 6 reps each @ 205lbs

Abs:
Cable crunches: 2 sets, 12 reps @ 110lbs
Leg Raises: 2 sets, 12 reps

The cable crunches are really challenging. I set the column mounted cable at about waist height, with a v-bar attachment. Kneel down, lean forward and tuck head down a bit. Pull the v-bar down so it touches the back of your head, then contract your abs and curl your upper body to the floor using ONLY your abs. Don’t pull with your arms.

Leg raises are easy to do wrong, and painful to boot. To do them right put your hands under your behind, palm down. Raise your head off the floor and pull your shoulders slightly off the floor. Now raise your legs to a height between where your knees and hips would be if you were standing. Try and complete all your reps without lowering your head or shoulders to the floor.

On another topic, I have almost all my Christmas shopping done now. What I have remaining will be done in Knoxville so we don’t have to transport the gifts in the xterra, which will already be loaded to the gills. I really hope we have better luck traveling than over Thanksgiving. It was awful.
