As I related in my recent post, I’ve finally finished paying off college loans, and am no longer paying the $250/month I’ve been paying (most months!) since college. (Thanks again MOM and DAD for your many sacrifices so that us kids could do what we’ve done and become who we are!)
Some of you also know that I’ve been driving the same 1994 Nissan Altima forever and a day. I’ve had it paid off for years now, and it’s slowly been aging. I bought it for 10k back in 1998, and lately with the hills of TN it’s been slowing down more on hills and making more creaks and groans.
So, I’ve been doing lots of research about cars I’d like to buy, and having lots of dreams where I get a speeding ticket…
Today Pattie and I tested a Nissan 350 Z (amazing car, loved it), a Mazda RX-8 (also amazing, rotary engine and backseat were perks), and the Hyundai Tiburon, both an ‘06 model and an ‘03 model which was just traded in TODAY by the original owners…
I decided to go with the choice that was very nearly equivalent to the 350z and the RX-8, yet only about 1/2 the price: the ‘03 Hyundai Tiburon.
I met the original owners, a Northwestern pilot and his 3rd degree blackbelt wife who BABIED this car. It has 37,000 miles on it, about 7,000 under average. It’s never been wrecked or smoked in, and is my new love. The dealership wanted x amount, and i talked them down $4,000… with the downpayment and trade-in of the Altima, guess what my payment is?
$256/month.
Mom and Dad, you get chariot service whenever you need and I can accomodate you!
Pics of my new darling (not the exact car, those will be coming soon)

You’ve more than earned it, baby!
How is the Tiburon “very nearly equivalent” to the RX-8 and the Z?
More like, “The RX-8 and the Z were out of my league so I had to settle for a Hyundai.”
More like, I drove all three, as I’m sure anonymous has not, and came to the conclusion that the performance was quite similar even though the payments were not.
It looks great. Congratulations!
