November and December were really busy months for me, and I felt quite sapped creatively afterwards… but lately I’ve been feeling the alter ego creative person that keeps me going, somehwhere in there.. stirring.. (sounds ominoous eh)..
After visiting the museums in nyc, I was really inspired to work on some more portraiture, and would like to start including more and more elaborate backgrounds. I’m starting with a self-portrait, with a simple drape. That drape and some dramatic lighting however make for some neat compositions… I’d like some feedback from the 2 of you that read this blog!
One of the self portraits will become a pastel in the very near future… whether it will be a 9 x 12, or a 24 by 36 is to be determined.
Very handsome portraits of you, my dear. My compliments to the photographer, whoever she may be.
I vote for the second portrait from the top, if my vote counts. The first is too religious, the third has phenomenal shadow, but the composition loses somehing because your eyes are closed. It would have had a nice, somber effect to it had your eyes been opened. The profile doesn’t have that cool shadow going on.
The eye is perfect in number two. Just the right amount of intensity with a great shadow happening on the left side. But then, I’m a big fan of the “I’m gonna kick your ass” look.
I liked all of them. As for what would work for a pastel…I think #2 and #4. The Batik background is very pretty.
Rich, looks like the NY trip was well worth it even though the weather was a bit nasty. Isn’t it fun to be inspired by others and then make your own version. The different lighting and backgrounds really make them special. Of course I’m kind of partial to the subject in the portrait also. I kind of agree with the others who have posted. #2 and #4 seem like good choices. I like the over the shoulder one of Pattie. And I must say, you do have a great photographer. My order is for a 9×12 pastel portrait of yourself some day. And of course I’ll want one of Kirsten also. Pattie and Chris would be nice also, but let’s start towards someday having one of each of my children.
Hope you’re doing better health wise!
Love you,
mom
Second one of you, but a little more detail in the shadow areas… Over the shoulder of Pattie is definitely the better of the two. She gleams like usual, but the 2nd has a better attitude. Looking forward to seeing the finals!
So, when did you shave the goat?
If you are looking to sell something, Rich, the last photo on the bottom is the one to do.
Chris,
About 2 weeks ago! Once in a long while I like to shave off the goatee and see what I looked like before I turned into an ape.
Not to jump on the bandwagon, but I also believe the second from the top is the most interesting composition of you, Rich. What is interesting is that it gives the illusion of a profile shot, when in fact it is straight on with heavy shadows on the left (your right).
I also prefer the second of Patty, as it provides a hint of elusive beauty. while the beholder can revel at what he or she sees, it is what is not seen that draws one in. Just my two cents.
On another note, I have already grown my winter coat on my face. Full beard and mustache to keep my face warm this time of year. I should posts pics.
