In Progress: Slick Ascent In China

Posted on Monday 17 April 2006

My cousin Tom went to China last year with his father and some students from Iowa State. He came back with many wonderful photographs, and a large beetle lodged in his throat… turns out they eat anything over there.

Anyway, I asked him if I could use some of his shots as inspiration for some pastel paintings, and he agreed.

The first of these is monumental in complexity and will be 2′ by 3′, and is still in pencil study phase as I work out compositional elements and piece together a value structure… It will eventually see the light of day.

The second is this: titled tentatively “Slick Ascent In China”

This is a shot from night 3

And night 4 (current state)

I have 2 finished abstract pieces to post, so stay tuned for more pastel dust soon.

Wow! That is really awesome! Makes me feel like taking the adventure. Intriguing! Makes me wonder whats at the bottom and top of the picutre beyond the reach of the camera lense. You picked a good one from Tom’s collection.

Sorry we missed you on Sunday.:(

    Love you,
    mom
