Something old, something bold, something black and white
Sometimes after I complete a new piece of work, I like to go back through my older work and review… in a way, each new piece I finish gives me a new outlook on these older pieces and sometimes I see something I missed before. Perhaps these images have had to age, unwatched and hidden from notice, in order to mature.
I’m sometimes also struck by the enormity of choices presented by boxes and boxes of pastels and like to retreat to black and white, to line art or simple shading… the honesty of it and the stark contrast of the forms is refreshing after the shades of shades of pastel dust that builds up over time.
Here’s an image from the past, I’d say from 1995, more or less. An artist friend agreed to pose for this, a senior illustration project that had me running all over to complete in time. It only made it to the stage of very detailed value study and never became a finished piece of art, but it caught my eye recently when thumbing through stuff from that period and I have begun to clean it up some now.
First, the way I left it long ago:

The detail! How did you have time to eat or sleep back then? I bet black and white, especially this complex, is harder to do than most of us realize.
